Feldrappe Scores Career-High 29 Points, Men's Hoops Edges Babson Wednesday Night, 79-76

WEST HARTFORD, Conn.- The University of St. Joseph (USJ) men's basketball team has not been below .500 in a non-covid season since dropping its opening game in the 2019-2020 season. Junior forward Friedrich Feldrappe (Berlin, Germany) made sure that streak stayed alive by pouring in a career-high 29 points to lead the Blue Jays to a thrilling 79-76 victory over back-to-back NEWMAC Tournament Champions Babson College, at James A. Calhoun Gymnasium on Wednesday night. With the win, the Blue Jays boosted their record to 2-1 on the season, while the Beavers dropped to 1-2 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED

In a game that featured a whopping 20 ties and 22 lead changes, Beavers Freshman guard Tim Mulvey (Reading, Mass.) hit his second of five three pointers of the night to give Babson a 12-6 lead with 14:41 left in the first half. Muvley, an outstanding freshman, scored 17 points on just seven shots. A few minutes later, the Blue Jays went on a 6-0 run to take an 18-17 lead after a Feldrappe layup. Later in the half, USJ Freshman guard Jakari Tertulien (Bridgeport, Conn.) went on his own 5-0 run in less than a minute span after making a layup then knocking down his first career three pointer to give the Blue Jays a 28-27 lead with under five minutes left in the first half. With the score tied at 37, Senior guard Tahmeen Dupree (Brooklyn, N.Y.) made a layup with three seconds left to give USJ a 39-37 halftime lead.

Trailing 59-57 with just over nine minutes left in the second half, Feldrappe drilled a three pointer to give USJ a 60-59 lead. It was the third and final three pointer of the night for Blue Jays leading scorer, who came into the evening 0 for 8 from behind the arch so far this season. Babson Senior guard Nate Amado (Hanson, Mass.) hit a free throw to tie the ball game up at 64 apiece with 6:47 left. USJ quickly responded on the very next possession, when Senior guard Kevin Cummings (Portsmouth, N.H.) made his second three-pointer of the night to give the Blue Jays a 67-64 lead with 6:37 remaining.

Amado, who scored a team-high 21 points, made a layup to cut the Beaver deficit to 75-74 with 1:24 left in the game. However, that was the closest Babson would get. Junior Guard Tyshawn Jackson (Hartford, Conn.) made four free throws in the final minute of play to help seal the win for the Blue Jays. Babson did have a few chances to tie the game, but Freshman guard Ryan Frauenheim (Manasquan, N.J.) missed two potential game-tying three pointers with under 10 seconds to go.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • USJ is now 6-0 all-time against Babson, a series that started back in 2021.
