Mitchell, Allo, Ouellette Named December HHC Athletes of the Month

WEST HARTFORD, Conn.  The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Department of Athletics would like to recognize the Hartford HealthCare Athletes of the Month for the fourth full month of the 2022-23 season, the month of December. These student-athletes went above and beyond during a highly competitive sports slate while standing out above the rest in the respective month. The award is normally presented to one male and one female student-athlete across all school sports at the end of each calendar month and is done so on behalf of USJ Athletics and Hartford HealthCare. For more on the December winners, please see below:

Tyree Mitchell (Men's Basketball) – A senior from East Hartford, Conn., Mitchell was an offensive catalyst for the Blue Jays in Decemeber, leading the program to the No. 1 ranking in the country in the D3hoops.com Top-25 poll. After starting off the month with seven points against Anna Maria (Dec. 3), Mitchell dropped 16 and 13 points against Elms and Rivier, Respectively, to power the Blue Jays to a 3-0 mark in conference play. Mitchell then erupted for a career-high 28 points in just 25 minutes of floor time to power the then No. 2 Blue Jays to a comfortable 97-54 victory over non-conference opponent Westfield State University (WSU) on Dec. 12. The 28-point outburst marked the most points scored in a game by a USJ player so far this season en route to Mitchell earning his first career GNAC Player of the Week accolade. He wrapped up his month of December with a perfect 5-for-5 outing from the floor, dropping 13 points on the road at No. 14 WPI on December 30. It marks Mitchell's second career Hartford HealthCare Athlete of the Month nod, and his first since Novemeber 2021.

Michael Allo (Men's Swimming & Diving) – A graduate student from Newington, Conn., Allo had a stellar weekend at the Connecticut Cup, leading the men to a sixth-place team finish. Over the two days, the graduate student set three new school records, setting program-best times in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke and the 500-yard free. Allo finished 16th in the 500-yard free, finishing in a time of 5:04.54. He followed up that performance with a fifth-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, touching the wall in a time of 1:01.04. He rounded out his spectacular weekend with an eighth-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke, besting his previous record with a time of 2:15.07. In addition to his record setting performances, Allo also paced USJ in the 100-yard free, finishing 21st, while also being a part of the Blue Jays' 400-yard medley, 200-yard medley, 200-yard free and 400-yard free relay teams. For his efforts, he was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Athlete of the Week for the second time this season on Dec. 5. It marks the second career Hartford HealthCare Athlete of the Month nod, and the second this year after he earned the honor in October.

Jordan Ouellette (Women's Basketball) – A junior from Bristol, Conn., Ouellette started the month of December with a bang, dropping a career-high 29 points to lift USJ past Mitchell on Dec. 1. The forward followed up the performance with a 16 point in the victory at Anna Maria on Dec. 3, before recording a double-double during the victory at Elms on Dec. 7. Her three-game outing earned her New England Women's Basketball Coaches Association (NEWBA) Team of the Week accolades. The award marked the third career weekly NEWBA honor for Ouellette, and the second for the Blue Jays this season. Ouellette carried over her success to the Moravian Steel Club Classic, as she averaged 11.0 points and 5.5 rebounds against #12 DeSales and Moravian, being named to the All-Tournament Team. The honor marks Ouellette's third career Hartford HealthCare Athlete of the Month award, and her first since January 2022.
