Women's Tennis Falls on the Road at Bridgewater State
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team was beaten by the Bridgewater State University (BSU) Bears in non-conference action, 6-1, to open the 2025 campaign Saturday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts in BRidgewater, Mass. The Bears won two of the three doubles matches to secure the sole point awarded for doubles play, while garnering victories in five of the six singles matches to take home the win. With the results, the Blue Jays begin the year at 0-1, while the Bears move to 1-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bears would win the first doubles contest of the day, securing the win at the No. 2 doubles slot after besting the team of senior Allie Long (East Hartford, Conn.) and junior Jillian Milo (Southington, Conn.).
- USJ bounced back at No. 1 doubles, as sophomore Maddie Rossetti (Hamden, Conn.) and senior Lili Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.) took home a 6-3 victory, knotting the doubles portion of the match at 1-1.
- However, BSU would claim the sole doubles point, winning at No. 3 doubles, 6-3, against junior Nina Gardella (Lebanon, Conn.) and senior Bernae Webb (Bridgeport, Conn.)
- Rossetti rounded out her perfect day to open singles play, winning at No. 1 singles in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, to tie the match at 1-1.
- The Bears regained the lead after the No. 6 singles match ended, as freshman Anna Beauchene (Oakdale, Conn.) fell in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, establishing a 2-1 edge for the hosts.
- Junior Daynah Echevarria (New Britain, Conn.) would also suffer defat during a tightly contest No. 5 singles match, 6-4, 6-3, before BSU secured the match victory after No. 4 singles, as sophomore Carolina Mancini (Manchester, Conn.) dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision, which extended the home teams advantage to 4-1.
- Senior Gia Alvarez (Meriden, Conn.) would take the opening set during her match at No. 3 singles, but succumbed to a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 result, before the Bears rounded out the win with a 7-5, 6-3, win at No. 2 singles against Garcia.
UP NEXT
The Blue Jays remain on the road, heading to Brighton, Mass., on Thursday, September 4 to face Simmons University. First serve against the Sharks at the Daly Field Athletic Complex is set for 4:00 p.m.
