WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker in its Breast Cancer Awareness Game, falling 1-0 to Lasell University in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest on Saturday afternoon at the USJ Soccer Field. With the result, the Blue Jays dropped to 3-6-1 overall and 3-2-1 in GNAC play, while the Lasers improved to 6-1-2 overall and 5-0-1 in the league.
After a scoreless first half, the game remained tight until the 87th minute, when Lasell's Ayla Hathaway delivered the decisive strike. Hathaway netted her sixth goal of the season at 86:38, finishing off a corner kick that was played short from Kendall Sniper to give the visitors a late 1-0 advantage.
The Blue Jays battled hard but were narrowly outshot 17-11 overall, though they matched the Lasers with five attempts on target. Sophomore goalkeeper Erika Horne (Killingly, Conn.) made four saves to keep USJ within reach, including three in the opening half, while Lasell keeper Elizabeth DaSilva turned away all five of USJ's efforts to earn the clean sheet.
USJ generated its best opportunities in the second half. Sophomore forward Julia Loughman (Wolcott, Conn.), senior forward Christina Quitoni (Patchogue, N.Y.), senior forward/midfielder Alana Picard (Windsor Locks, Conn.) and senior forward/defender Zoe Zappone (Plymouth, Conn.) each forced DaSilva into saves. Loughman nearly equalized in the 89th minute, but her attempt sailed just wide.
