Women's Soccer Battles, Falls on the Road at Fitchburg State Friday Night

FITCHBURG, Mass. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's soccer team battled, but fell on the road at Fitchburg State University (FSU), 1-0, to open the 2025 regular season Friday night Elliot Field in FItchburg, Mass. With the result, the Blue Jays start the year at 0-1-0, while the Falcons open the year at 1-0-0.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Junior goalkeeper Madison Corcoran (Bristol, Conn.) was tested early, producing two saves in the opening five minutes to keep the game scoreless.

  • Senior midfielder Gillian Barresi (Holtsville, N.Y.) nearly struck first in the eighth minute with a looping effort from 30 yards out, but her shot rattled off the crossbar.

  • The Falcons took control after the near miss and broke through in the 34th minute to grab a 1-0 lead.

  • Sophomore forward Julia Loughman (Wolcott, Conn.) forced a key save late in the half, but FSU carried its 1-0 edge into the break.

  • USJ came close to equalizing in the second half, but the Falcons' goalkeeper made a double save to preserve the lead.

  • The Blue Jays created more pressure late, but FSU held firm to secure the 1-0 victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Corcoran played all 90 minutes in goal for USJ, picking up the loss (0-1-0) after making four saves.
  • The Falcons narrowly outshot the Blue Jays, 14-10. USJ generated more shots on goal though, outshooting FSU, 6-5.
  • FSU held the edge in corner kicks, earning seven compared to USJ's four.

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays look to bounce back on Wednesday, Septemeber 3, as the team travels to intrastate foe Eastern Connecticut State University. Opening kickoff against the Warriors at Rick McCarthy Field in Mansfield, Conn., is set for 7:00 p.m.
