Women's Basketball Falls in Regular-Season Finale at Saint Joseph's College

STANDISH, MAINE — The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's basketball team concluded its 2025–26 regular season Saturday afternoon, falling to Saint Joseph's College of Maine (SJC), 76–54, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action inside the Harold Alfond Center. With the result, the Blue Jays — who will be the No. 7 seed in the upcoming GNAC playoffs — finish the regular season at 8–17 overall and 6–6 in conference play, while the Monks — the No. 2 seed — improve to 15–10 overall and 10–2 in the league.

HOW IT HAPPENED

SJC jumped out to an early 9–3 advantage at the 6:25 mark. USJ responded as sophomore guard Sequoia Turcotte Briggs (Andover, Conn.) knocked down a three-pointer with 3:15 remaining in the quarter to cut the deficit to three, 13–10. The Monks closed the period on a 6–2 run to take a 19–12 lead into the second.

The Blue Jays opened the second quarter on a 5–2 run, capped by a triple from freshman guard Maddy Evans (Hebron, Conn.), trimming the deficit to 21–17 with 6:59 left in the half. USJ continued to find its rhythm offensively, using a 7–3 stretch — highlighted by five points from sophomore guard Nevaeh Yorke (Norwich, Conn.) — to take a 24–23 lead with 37 seconds remaining. However, the Monks scored the final basket of the half to reclaim a 25–24 edge entering the break.

The Monks looked to pull away in the third, but Turcotte Briggs connected on back-to-back three-pointers to keep USJ within two, 32–30, with 7:35 on the clock. The teams traded baskets until a 10–2 SJC run pushed the lead to double digits, 48–36, with 1:21 left in the period. After both sides exchanged free throws late, the Monks carried a 50–38 advantage into the fourth.

USJ mounted an early push in the final quarter, using an 8–4 run to pull within eight, 54–46, with 7:38 remaining. However, the Monks maintained control and closed on a 22–8 stretch to secure the 76–54 victory.
