Men's Tennis Takes Down Emerson in Spring Opener Saturday Afternoon, 5-2
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's tennis team used stellar performances in singles matches to defeat Emerson College (Emerson), 5-2, Saturday afternoon in non-conference play at the Magic Lincer Tennis Club in Manchester, Conn. With the result the Blue Jays improved to 3-0 on the year, while the Lions dropped to 2-5.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The team of juniors Karol Romer (Warsaw, Poland) and Mateus Silvestre (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) fell at No. 1 doubles, dropping a 7-5 result to Filippo Nocchi and Connor Leung.
- Emerson then secured the sole doubles point as the Lions' No. 2 doubles team of Cameron McAllister and Noah Mesaros bested USJ's freshman Manuel Hernandez-Plaza (Dorado, Puerto Rico) and sophomore Rodrigo Torres (Lima, Peru), 6-2.
- USJ's No. 3 doubles team of junior Marko Karpyuk (Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine) and senior Jonathan Huot (South Windsor, Conn.) secured the lone doubles win for USJ, defeating Finn Leeves-Coben and Pete Sevikul, 6-2.
- Romer bounced back at No. 1 singles, taking down Nocchi in straight sets, 6-0, 7-6 (7-3).
- Torres would also find victory in singles play, defeating Leung at No. 2 singles, 6-7 (3-7), 6-0, 6-2.
- Sevikul earned the win at No. 3 singles, defeating USJ's Hernandez-Plaza, 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6).
- Silvestre secured a point for the Blue Jays at No. 4 singles, defeating McAllister, 6-2 7-6 (7-5).
- Junior Ryan Boucher (Bedford, N.H.) won in straight sets at No. 5 singles, taking down Mesaros, 6-4, 7-5.
- Karpyuk won his second match of the day, winning at No. 6 singles against Leeves-Cobe, 6-2, 6-4.
UP NEXT
The Blue Jays return to the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex for a home match against Rhode Island College on Thursday, March 6. Opening serve against the Anchormen in West Hartford, Conn. is set for 3:00 p.m.
