Men's Tennis Set to Compete at ITA New England Regionals
MEDFORD, Mass. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's tennis team is set to compete at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) New England Regional Championships this weekend. Competition will take place split between the Voute Courts on the campus of Tufts University in Medford, Mass. and the DuPont Tennis Courts on the campus of MIT in Cambridge, Mass. The Blue Jays will be represented by sophomore Rodrigo Torres (Lima, Peru) and junior Karol Romer (Warsaw, Poland) in the main draw doubles and singles brackets, while sophomore Christian Kaverud (Glastonbury, Conn.) and junior Mateus Silvestre (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) will compete in the B draw singles bracket.
The ITA New England Regionals, which are slated to begin Friday, September 27 and conclude on Sunday, September 29, is one of the premier events in college tennis, featuring the best players from Division III schools throughout New England. This weekend's regional will mark the first time that USJ will compete in the event.
Romer and Torres begin the regionals for USJ on Friday, playing the team of James Bogdanovic and Jason Daly from Colby College at 9:00 a.m. at the DuPont Tennis Courts. With a victory, Romer and Torres would play the No. 2 overall seed in the doubles bracket, Vuk Vuksanovic and Derin Acaraglu from Tufts University at approximately 10:00 a.m.
Torres will then open the main draw singles portion of the tournament in the Round of 64 against Shawn Berdia of Williams College. Berdia enters the ITA Regionals after finishing as the 29th-ranked player in the country this past spring. The opening round matchup is slated to begin at approximately 12:30 p.m. at the DuPont Tennis Courts. With a win, Torres would advance to the Round of 32, facing off against either Alex Ganchev from Tufts or George Danes from fellow Conference of New England (CNE) school Endicott at approximately 3:00 p.m.
Romer is slated to start his main draw singles play in the Round of 64 against Tufts' Derin Acaroglu at approximately 1:30 p.m. at the DuPont Tennis Courts. With a victory, Romer will move on to face either Alex Park of Bates, or the No. 2 overall seed, Dylan Walters from Brandeis in the Round of 32 at approximately 4:00 p.m.
In B draw singles action, Silvestre begins with a matchup against Jack Pollock of Bowdoin at approximately 2:30 p.m., while Kaverud will face off against Brandeis' Benjamin Kotzen at approximately 3:15 p.m. in the Round of 64. With a victory, Silvestre would take on the No. 3 overall seed Shrish Choudhary of MIT at approximately 4:00 p.m. and Kaverud would take on the No. 2 overall seed Andrej Djokic of Tufts at approximately 4:45 p.m. in the Round of 32. All of Silvestre's and Kaverud's matches will take place at the DuPont Tennis Courts.
