WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's soccer team extended its unbeaten conference run, playing out a 2-2 draw with Rivier University (Rivier) Saturday afternoon at the USJ Soccer Field in West Hartford, Conn. With the result, the Blue Jays moved to 5-3-2 overall and 4-0-2 in the GNAC, while the Raiders stand at 2-4-5 overall and 2-2-2 in GNAC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • USJ broke the deadlock in the 29th minute as the Blue Jays pressured the Rivier back line into an own goal, taking a 1-0 lead.

  • The hosts carried that advantage into halftime, with sophomore goalkeeper Will Slayton (Manchester, Conn.) making a pair of key first-half saves to preserve the lead.

  • Rivier equalized in the 62nd minute, when Luiggi Ferreira finished a cross from David Pereira to make it 1-1.

  • The Blue Jays responded quickly: sophomore forward Damir Cirikovic (Southington, Conn.) found the back of the net in the 73rd minute after pouncing on his own rebound inside the box, pushing USJ ahead 2-1.

  • The Raiders, however, drew level once more in the 79th minute through Alejandro Quezada, who scored off a feed from Matthews Ferreira to even it 2-2.

  • Slayton came up with another save late to deny a potential winner, and USJ held firm through the closing moments to secure the conference point.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Cirikovic's strike was his first goal of the season.

  • The Blue Jays outshot Rivier 16-15, including an 8-5 edge in shots on goal.

  • Slayton played the full 90 minutes, recording three saves.

  • Senior forward Emmanuel Ofori (East Hartford, Conn.) led USJ with four shots, two on goal.

  • Sophomore midfielders Elis Sulollari (Cheshire, Conn.) and Mario Milardo (Middletown, Conn.) each added offensive pressure with multiple attempts.

  • Rivier goalkeeper Logan Clough made six stops.

The USJ men's soccer team hosts Regis College for a top of the table GNAC matchup on Tuesday, October 7. Kickoff between the Blue Jays and Pride is set for 3:30 p.m. at the USJ Soccer Field in West Hartford, Conn.
