Baseball Ends 2025 Season Against Johnson & Wales in GNAC Pod A Finals

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The fourth-seeded University of Saint Joseph (USJ) baseball team saw its 2025 season come to a close Sunday afternoon, falling to top-seeded Johnson & Wales University (JWU), 12-7, in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament Pod A Finals at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletics Complex.

The Blue Jays wrapped up their second campaign in program history with a 25-18 overall record, eight wins better than their inaugural varsity season in 2024. With the victory, the Wildcats (26-13) advanced to the GNAC Championship Series where they will host second-seeded Mitchell College in a best-of-three series Thursday and Friday vying for the GNAC title.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • USJ jumped out to an early lead, scoring the game's first five runs. Freshman infielder Jack Kane (West Hartford, Conn.) opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the second inning, and a Johnson & Wales error allowed sophomore infielder Tyler Carlstrom (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and sophomore outfielder Joseph Fritz (Tampa, Fla.) to score and build a 3-0 lead.
  • In the third, Fritz laced a two-run double to left-center field, bringing home junior outfielders Ryan Quinn (Middletown, Conn.) and Dom Scalia (Northford, Conn.) to make it 5-0.
  • The Wildcats answered quickly. Jack Obert hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 5-3, and Owen Davis followed later in the frame with an RBI single to tie the game, 5-5.
  • Johnson & Wales took its first lead in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Ryan St. Jean and never trailed again.
  • Fritz drove in two runs for USJ in the sixth to make it 9-7, but JWU added three more runs to pull away and advance to its sixth consecutive GNAC Championship Series.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • USJ is now 0-5 all-time against Johnson & Wales, including 0-3 in GNAC Tournament play.
  • Fritz went 3-for-6 at the plate and tied his career high with four RBIs.
  • Scalia went 4-for-6 and scored twice, recording the second four-hit game of his career. His second hit of the game—a single to center field in the fourth inning—marked the 100th hit of his career.
  • The Blue Jays' 25 wins are an eight-win improvement from their 2024 debut season.
