Volleyball Drops Non-Conference Finale to Intrastate Foe WestConn Wednesday Night

DANBURY, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's volleyball team dropped its non-conference finale, 3-0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-13), to intrastate foe WestConn Wednesday evening at Stephen Feldman Arena in Danbury, Conn. With the result, USJ dropped to 6-21 overall on the year, while the Wolves improved to 18-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • USJ opened the match with an early kill from junior outside hitter Shaye Harris (Bloomfield, Conn.), but WestConn quickly answered with a string of points fueled by multiple service aces to grab a 9-2 advantage.

  • The Blue Jays cut the deficit to 12-10 following a five-point stretch sparked by a kill from graduate middle hitter Avery Fitzgerald (Milford, Conn.) and an ace from graduate outside hitter Emilia Dugas (Newington, Conn.).

  • WestConn responded with a 6-2 run to regain control and close out the first set, 25-15.

  • In the second set, Harris and Dugas connected for a pair of early kills as USJ battled to stay within striking distance.

  • The Wolves, however, built separation midway through the frame, extending their lead to 18-6.

  • Fitzgerald and sophomore setter Gabi Wanner (Southington, Conn.) added late points, but the deficit proved too much as the Wolves secured the set, 25-11, and a 2-0 edge in the match.

  • WestConn jumped out to an early advantgae in the third set, taking an 8-2 lead.

  • The Blue Jays closed the gap to 9-5 after kills from Dugas, but the Wolves answered with an 8-1 run, breaking open a 17-6 lead. THe deficit again proved too much to overcome, as the hosts claimed the set, 25-13, and the match, 3-0.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Harris led the Blue Jays with seven kills.

  • Dugas followed with five kills, seven digs, and one ace.

  • Wanner handed out 12 assists, recorded two kills, and added a service ace.

  • Sophomore libero Alyssa Dugas (Newington, Conn.) anchored the back row with a team-high 18 digs.

  • Fitzgerald chipped in two kills and a solo block.

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays close out the 2025 regular season on Saturday, November 8 with a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tri-match at New England College in Henniker, N.H. The team will first play Lasell University at 1:00 p.m., before closing out the day against the Pilgrims at 3:00 p.m.
