Volleyball Drops GNAC Road Match to Albertus Magnus, 3-1
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's volleyball team dropped a competitive Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match to intrastate rival Albertus Magnus College (Albertus), 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-23), Tuesday night inside Cosgrove Marcus Messer Athletic Center in New Haven, Conn. With the result, the Blue Jays fell to 4-18 overall and 2-5 in GNAC play, while the Falcons improved to 12-11 overall and 3-5 in league action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
USJ opened strong, trading points early before using a five-point surge highlighted by a service ace and multiple kills from junior outside hitter Shaye Harris (Bloomfield, Conn.), to build a 15-11 advantage.
-
Graduate student outside hitter Emilia Dugas (Newington, Conn.) and junior middle blocker Sofia Weiss (Babylon, N.Y.) each added kills as USJ extended the lead to 22-16.
-
After Albertus cut the margin to 24-21, the Falcons committed a costly error, giving the Blue Jays the set and an early 1-0 lead in the match.
-
USJ carried that momentum into the second set, jumping ahead 7-3 behind service aces from sophomore setter Gabi Wanner (Southington, Conn.) and Harris and numerous Falcon attack errors.
-
Albertus responded with a 7-0 run to swing the momentum and establish a 10-7 edge.
-
The Blue Jays rallied late, retaking the advantage, 18-17, after a kill from graduate student middle hitter Avery Fitzgerald (Milford, Conn.), but the Falcons closed out the set, 25-21, to even the match.
-
Harris and Dugas sparked the Blue Jays early in the third, combining for four kills as the set stayed close through the midpoint.
-
Albertus pieced together a mid-set serving stretch to open up a six-point cushion, which the Blue Jays could not recover from as the Falcons held on for another 25-21 win, increasing the gap to 2-1.
-
In the fourth set, USJ erased an early deficit after sophomore libero Alyssa Dugas (Newington, Conn.) notched three service aces, establishing a 7-6 lead.
-
The two sides traded points throughout the frame as Wanner racked up numerous service aces to help USJ hold a 21-17 edge.
