Volleyball Bests Dean, Falls to Emmanuel During GNAC Tri-Match Saturday

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's volleyball team split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tri-match Saturday inside James A. Calhoun Gymnasium, earning a 3-1 win over Dean College (20-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-16) before falling to Emmanuel College (25-14, 25-5, 25-13). With the results, the Blue Jays moved to 4-16 overall and 2-4 in GNAC play.

USJ 3, DEAN 1 (20-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-16)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Dean took the opening set, using a late 5-1 run to pull away from a tight frame and win 25-20.

  • The Blue Jays answered in the second set, jumping ahead 9-4 behind kills from junior outside hitter Shaye Harris (Bloomfield, Conn.) and graduate outside hitter Emilia Dugas (Newington, Conn.).

  • Sophomore setter Gabi Wanner (Southington, Conn.) distributed the offense effectively, connecting with junior middle blocker Sofia Weiss (Babylon, N.Y.) and graduate middle hitter Avery Fitzgerald (Milford, Conn.) as USJ evened the match with a 25-20 win.

  • In the third, Harris and E. Dugas combined for eight kills, while Weiss added two blocks to help the Blue Jays take the set, 25-18.

  • USJ carried its momentum into the fourth set, using a 7-2 run midway through the frame to build separation. Harris sealed the victory with her 22nd kill of the match to give USJ a 25-16 win and the match, 3-1.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Harris led all players with a career-high 22 kills.

  • Harris also notched a double-double, tallying a season-high 18 digs.
  • E. Dugas posted a season-best 12 kills against the Bulldogs.

  • Wanner handed out a career-high 40 assists and collected five digs.

  • Sophomore libero Alyssa Dugas (Newington, Conn.) paced the defense with 20 digs.

EMMANUEL 3, USJ 0 (25-14, 25-5, 25-13)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • USJ traded points with Emmanuel early in the first set before the Saints used a 6-0 run to pull ahead and take control. Harris and Fitzgerald each tallied kills, but the Saints closed the frame, 25-14.

  • Emmanuel carried that momentum into the second set, jumping out to a 10-1 lead behind strong serving and efficient play.

  • The Blue Jays opened the third set with a competitive stretch, earning points from Harris, Weiss, and E. Dugas to make it 10-7.

  • The Saints responded with a 7-1 burst to regain control and closed the set, 25-13, to complete the sweep.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Harris led the Blue Jays with six kills.

  • E. Dugas added four kills and a team-best nine digs.

  • Fitzgerald chipped in two kills on the day.

  • Wanner tallied six assists and six digs.

  • A. Dugas added three digs and two assists.

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays remain in West Hartford, hosting non-conference foe Bay Path University on Thursday, October 18. Opening serve against the Wildcats is set for 7 p.m.
