Volleyball Falls on the Road at Connecticut College Tuesday Night

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to non-conference and intrastate foe Connecticut College (Connecticut), 3-0 (25-8, 25-10, 25-11), Tuesday night inside Luce Fieldhouse in New London, Conn. With the result, the Blue Jays dropped to 3-15 overall on the season, while the Camels improved to 7-7.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Connecticut took control early in the opening set, using a scoring run to build a sizable lead. Junior outside hitter Shaye Harris (Bloomfield, Conn.) and graduate middle hitter Avery Fitzgerald (Milford, Conn.) each recorded kills for USJ, but the Camels maintained momentum to take the first set, 25-8.

  • In the second set, sophomore libero Alyssa Dugas (Newington, Conn.) delivered a service ace to make it 4-3 before the hosts strung together several points to extend their advantage.

  • Harris and graduate outside hitter Emilia Dugas (Newington, Conn.) each found the floor for kills late in the frame, but Connecticut closed it out, 25-10.

  • The Blue Jays produced some strong rallies in the third set, highlighted by kills from Harris, junior middle blocker Sofia Weiss (Babylon, N.Y.), and junior right side Karla Flores (Oakdale, Conn.).

  • USJ stayed within striking distance through the midpoint of the set before Connecticut put together a late run to seal the frame, 25-11, and complete the sweep.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Harris led USJ with four kills.

  • E. Dugas finished with four digs and one service ace.

  • Sophomore setter Gabi Wanner (Southington, Conn.) handed out four assists and added an ace.

  • A. Dugas anchored the defense with six digs.

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays return home for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tri-match on Saturday, Oct. 11 against Dean College and Emmanuel College. Opening serve against the Bulldogs inside James A. Calhoun Gymnasium is set for 11 a.m., followed by a 3 p.m. first serve against the Saints.
