Volleyball Drops Opening Match of Bonnie May Invitational Against Elmira

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) volleyball team dropped its opening match of the Bonnie May Invitational against Elmira College (Elmira), 3-0, Friday night inside Scott Gym on the campus of Smith College in Northampton, Mass. The Soaring Eagles won the match by scores of 25-21, 25-18, and 25-20. With the result, the Blue Jays fall to 0-5 on the season, while Elmira improves to 1-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The opening set was tightly contested, with seven ties and four lead changes.

  • Junior outside hitter Shaye Harris (Bloomfield, Conn.) sparked USJ with early kills, and graduate outside hitter Emilia Dugas (Newington, Conn.) added a winner to even the score at 13.

  • The Blue Jays surged ahead 21-19 behind an ace from sophomore setter Gabi Wanner (Southington, Conn.), but Elmira responded with six-straight points to close the set, 25-21.

  • In the second frame, USJ jumped ahead 3-1 on kills from Harris and senior defensive specialist Tatianah Ziegler (Troy, N.Y.).

  • Elmira used a strong middle attack to counter and took control midway through, eventually pulling away for a 25-18 win and 2-0 lead in the match.

  • The Blue Jays showed resilience in the third set, with junior outside hitter Payton Yazmer (Killingworth, Conn.) delivering a kill and an ace during a 5-0 spurt that cut their deficit to 22-18.

  • Harris and junior middle blocker Sofia Weiss (Babylon, N.Y.) chipped in with late kills, but Elmira held off the rally, taking the set 25-20 to secure the sweep.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Harris paced USJ with eight kills, eight digs, one ace, and one block.

  • Dugas contributed seven kills, four digs, and two block assists.

  • Weiss tallied two kills, two blocks, and three digs.

  • Ziegler added two kills, two aces, and four digs.

  • Wanner dished out 16 assists, adding three digs, three blocks, and one ace.

  • Sophomore libero Alyssa Dugas (Newington, Conn.) anchored the defense with a team-high 12 digs and one ace.

  • Elmira's Aimee Bridges led all players with 10 kills and 12.5 points.

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays conclude the Bonnie May Invitational tomorrow, Saturday, September 6, with a pair of matches. USJ first meets host Smith College at 10:00 a.m., before concluding the day against Vassar College at noon.
