Women's Tennis Wins Third Straight, Holds Off WNE, 4-3, Thursday Afternoon
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team extended its winning streak to three matches, holding off Western New England University (WNE), 4-3, in Conference of New England (CNE) play Thursday afternoon at the Forest Park Tennis Courts in Springfield, Mass. With the result, the Blue Jays improved to 6-8 overall and 4-5 in CNE play, while the Golden Bears concluded their fall season at 3-9 overall and 3-7 in the CNE.

Sophomore Maddie Rossetti (Hamden, Conn.) and senior Lili Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.) got the match started in dominant fashion at No. 1 doubles, sweeping their opponents 6-0.

Junior Jillian Milo (Southington, Conn.) and senior Allie Long (East Hartford, Conn.) battled at No. 2 doubles but dropped a 6-4 decision, setting up a decisive No. 3 doubles match.

Senior Gia Alvarez (Meriden, Conn.) and junior Nina Gardella (Lebanon, Conn.) came up clutch for the Blue Jays at No. 3 doubles, securing a 6-3 victory to claim the lone doubles point for USJ and take a 1-0 lead.

Alvarez featured at No. 3 singles but fell in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, as WNE tied the match at 1-1.

Long helped USJ retake the lead at No. 5 singles with a 6-3, 6-0 straight-set victory, putting the Blue Jays ahead 2-1.

Rossetti capped a perfect day at No. 1 singles, cruising to a 6-4, 6-1 win to extend USJ's advantage to 3-1.

Sophomore Carolina Mancini (Manchester, Conn.) clinched the match for the Blue Jays at No. 4 singles, winning 6-3, 6-2, to push the margin to 4-1.

Milo competed at No. 6 singles, dropping a 6-3, 6-2 decision as the Golden Bears cut the deficit to 4-2.

Garcia battled at No. 2 singles, falling in a tightly contested match, 7-6 (10-8), 6-4, but USJ had already secured the team victory, 4-3.
UP NEXT
The Blue Jays return to West Hartford for their final regular-season match on Saturday, Oct. 25, hosting Endicott College. Opening serve against the Gulls at the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex is set for 12 p.m. The matchup will also serve as Senior Day for the Blue Jays.
