Women's Tennis Falls to Nichols, 6-1, Tuesday Afternoon
WEST HARTFORD, Conn - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team fell at home to Nichols College, 6-1, in Conference of New England (CNE) play Tuesday afternoon at the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex in West Hartford, Conn. With the result, the Blue Jays dropped to 3–6 overall and 1–3 in CNE play, while the Bison improved to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in conference matches.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Junior Nina Gardella (Lebanon, Conn.) and senior Bernae Webb (Bridgeport, Conn.) opened the match at No. 3 doubles, winning by default to give USJ the advantage in doubles action.
- Sophomore Maddie Rossetti (Hamden, Conn.) and senior Lili Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.) opened play at No. 1 doubles but were overpowered by Kamora Helton and Pamela Gonzalez-Vallardi, 6–0, leveling doubles play at 1-1.
- Junior Jillian Milo (Southington, Conn.) and senior Allie Long (East Hartford, Conn.) battled at the No. 2 spot but fell to Charis Vogler and Cora Brosch, 6–2, as Nichols secured the lone doubles point and took a 1-0 edge in the match.
- Gardella was slotted to play at No. 6 singles, winning by default to level the overall score at 1-1.
- Garcia took part in the No. 2 singles match, falling to Gonzalez-Vallardi in straight sets, 6–0, 6–0, as Nichols retook the lead, 2-1.
- Senior Gia Alvarez (Meriden, Conn.) featured at No. 3 singles, but dropped her match to Vogler, 6–1, 6–0, as the Bison increased the gap to 3-1.
- Rossetti faced Helton at No. 1 singles, but succumbed in straight sets, 6–1, 6–1, as Nichols secured the match victory, 4-1.
- Long battled at No. 4 singles but came up short against Brosch, 6–3, 6–0, furthering the deficit to 5-1.
- Milo pushed her match at No. 5 singles to three sets against Helly, taking the opening set, 6–3, before dropping the second set, 6-4, and losing in the 10 point tiebreaking third set, 10-7, enabling Nichols to take home the 6-1 victory.
UP NEXT
The Blue Jays head on the road for a CNE matchup against Gordon College on Saturday, October 4. Opening serve against the Scots at the Brigham Athletic Complex in Wenham, Mass., is set for 1:00 p.m.
