Women's Tennis Falls on the Road at Salve Regina Saturday
NEWPORT, R.I. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team dropped a non-conference road match to Salve Regina, 6-1, Friday afternoon at the Salve Regina Tennis Courts in Newport, R.I. With the result, the Blue Jays fell to 2-3 overall, while the Seahawks improved to 1-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED

The No. 2 doubles team of senior Allie Long (East Hartford, Conn.) and junior Jillian Milo (Southington, Conn.) opened the match, falling 6-4 to Madigan Murphy and Anna Grace Hjerpe.

USJ answered at No. 3 doubles, where junior Nina Gardella (Lebanon, Conn.) and senior Bernae Webb (Bridgeport, Conn.) earned a 6-4 victory over Cristiana De Vivo and Cayla Dolan.

The doubles point came down to the top court, where Stephanie Davis and Kaydin Pinto secured it for Salve Regina with a 6-4 win over senior Lili Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.) and sophomore Maddie Rossetti (Hamden, Conn.), giving the Seahawks a 1-0 lead in the match.

In singles play, senior Gia Alvarez (Meriden, Conn.) was first to finish, dropping a 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 3 against Sophia Padro as Salve Regina took a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Seahawks extended their edge at No. 2 singles, where Davis defeated Garcia, 6-0, 6-0, to make it 3-0.

Salve Regina clinched the overall victory with Murphy's 6-3, 6-1 win over sophomore Carolina Mancini (Manchester, Conn.) at No. 4 singles, stretching the lead to 4-0.

Hjerpe followed with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Long at No. 5 singles, pushing the advantage to 5-0.

Sloane Nelson kept the momentum going at No. 6 singles, defeating Milo, 6-1, 6-2, to make it 6-0.

USJ closed the day on a high note as Rossetti picked up the Blue Jays' lone point at No. 1 singles, posting a straight-set win, 6-4, 6-2, over Pinto.

The Blue Jays return home to open Conference of New England play, hosting cross town foes the University of Hartford on Tuesday, September 16. First serve from the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex in West Hartford, Conn., is set for 3:00 p.m.
