Women's Tennis Falls in GNAC Championship
NEW LONDON, N.H. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team saw its historic 2024 season come to a close, falling in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship Match to top-seeded Colby-Sawyer College (CSC), 5-0, Saturday afternoon at the Kelsey Courts in New London, N.H. The Blue Jays were making its first appearance in the GNAC Title match since 1999. Graduate student Olivia Santoro (Cheshire, Conn.) and freshman Maddie Rossetti (Hamden, Conn.) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Chargers won at No. 1 doubles as Elise Hogan and Sky Jara defeated Santoro and Rossetti, 8-6, to take a 1-0 lead.
- The hosts increased the deficit to 2-0, as Maria Espinosa Lopez and Isabella Gutierrez Avendaño bested freshman Shelly Sirisavath (East Hartford, Conn.) and junior Liliana Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.), 8-1.
- CSC completed the doubles sweep at No. 3 doubles, as Peyton Dugan and Avery Nielsen defeated raduate student Kate Hardy (Southington, Conn.) and sophomore Nina Gardella (Lebanon, Conn.), 8-5, to take a 3-0 advantage into the singles matches.
- The Chargers moved within one point of the championship at No. 1 singles, as Dugan defeated Santoro, 6-0, 6-3.
- CSC completed the sweep, winning its fourth-straight GNAC title as Garcia fell to Gutierrez Avendaño at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-1.
UP NEXT
The Blue Jays will take the winter off, returning to the courts on Sunday, March, 30, at Yeshiva University in New York, N.Y.
