Women's Tennis Wins Third Straight, Sweeps Curry, 7-0

MILTON, Mass. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team continued its strong start to the season, winning its third-straight match Saturday afternoon, defeating non-conference foes Curry College, 7-0, at the Trent J. Scott '96 Tennis Courts in Milton, Mass. The Blue Jays also swept their opponents for the third-consecutive match. With the result, the Blue Jays improve to 3-1 on the year while the Colonels drop to 0-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The pair of juniors Alexandra Long (East Hartford, Conn.) and Gia Alvarez (Meriden, Conn.) were slated to play at No. 3 doubles for the Blue Jays, but the Colonels did not field a team for the No. 3 doubles match, handing the victory to USJ by default.
  • The Blue Jays No. 1 doubles team of graduate student Olivia Santoro (Cheshire, Conn.) and freshman Maddie Rossetti (Hamden, Conn.) picked up their third-straight win as a duo, securing the lone point awarded for doubles matches after securing a 6-2 victory.
  • USJ completed the sweep at No. 2 doubles as graduate student Kate Hardy (Southington, Conn.) and sophomore Jillian Milo (Southington, Conn.) took home a 6-2 win as well, sending USJ into the singles portion of the match with a 1-0 lead.
  • Freshman Carolina Mancini (Manchester, Conn.) was slated to play at No. 6 singles, but earned a default victory after Curry did not field a player, establishing a 2-0 Blue Jays' lead.
  • Junior Liliana Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.) continued the Blue Jays momentum at No. 4 singles, earning a dominating 6-0, 6-0, straight set win, increasing the gap to 3-0.
  • Freshman Shelly Sirisavath (East Hartford, Conn.) secured the win for USJ at No. 3 singles, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, to extend the advantage to 4-0.
  • Santoro rounded out her stellar day at the No. 1 singles position, picking up the victory, 6-2, 6-0.
  • Rossetti also improved to 2-0 on the day at No. 2 singles, winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
  • Sophomore Daynah Echevarria (New Britain, Conn.) rounded out the sweep for USJ at No. 5 singles, earning a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 win to send USJ home with a 7-0 victory.

The Blue Jays look to extend its winning streak to four matches as the team travels to face Roger Williams on Wednesday, September 11. opening serve at the RWU Tennis Courts in Bristol, R.I., is slated for 4:00 p.m.
