Fourth-Seeded Women's Tennis Falls to Top-Seeded CSC in GNAC Semifinals
NEW LONDON, N.H. – The fourth-seeded University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team saw its 2023 season come to a close Saturday afternoon, falling to top-seeded Colby-Sawyer College (CSC), 5-1, during the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Semifinals Saturday afternoon on the Kelsey Courts in New London, N.H.. With the result, the Blue Jays conclude their season with a 3-8 record.
KEY MOMENTS
- CSC took the opening match at No. 1 singles, as Grace Carpenter and Maria Espinosa Lopez defeated the duo of senior Kathleen Gilland (Wethersfield, Conn.) and sophomore Liliana Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.), 8-0.
- CSC doubled the gap at No. 3 doubles as the team of Mary Thoms and Mei Genest took down sophomore Gia Alvarez (Meriden, Conn.) and freshman Nina Gardella (Lebanon, Conn.), 8-4.
- The Blue Jays pulled one back at No. 2 doubles as the team of senior Ananya Srivatsav (South Windsor, Conn.) and freshman Jillian Milo (Southington, Conn.), defeated Amelia Campanella and Callie Valeri, 8-5, cutting the gap to 2-1 after doubles.
- CSC reestablished a two-match lead, 3-1, at No. 4 singles, as Thoms defeated Alvarez in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
- Carpenter put the Chargers within match point at No. 1 singles, defeating Gilland in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, to increase the lead to 4-1.
- CSC put an end to the match at No. 3 singles, as Campanella defeated Srivatsav, 6-3, 6-0, to secure the victory for the Chargers, 5-1.
