Women's Tennis Wins Third Straight Match, Takes Down Rivals Albertus Magnus, 9-0
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team extended its winning streak to 28 matches over rivals Albertus Magnus College (AMC), defeating the Falcons in dominating fashion, 9-0, during Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play Wednesday afternoon at the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex in West Hartford, Conn. The victory sees the Blue Jays clinch a spot in the GNAC playoffs. With the result, the Blue Jays improve to 3-3 overall and 2-0 in GNAC play while the Falcons drop to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in conference action.
KEY MOMENTS
- The Blue Jays opened the match strong at No. 2 doubles as the team of senior Ananya Srivatsav (South Windsor, Conn.) and freshman Jillian Milo (Southington, Conn.) defeated the Falcons duo of Giana Cagna and Tori Walsh, 8-1.
- Senior Kathleen Gilland (Wethersfield, Conn.) and sophomore Liliana Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.) kept the momentum rolling at No. 1 doubles, defeating JuJu Oliver and Emily Perez, 8-0, extending the USJ lead to 2-0.
- The No. 3 doubles team of sophomore Gia Alvarez (Meriden, Conn.) and freshman Nina Gardella (Lebanon, Conn.). made it a doubles sweep for the Blue Jays, taking down AMC's Naomi Allen and Bailey Mitchell-Warren, 8-2 to extend the gap to 3-0.
- Garcia carried USJ's winning ways into the singles matches, making quick work of Cagna at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
- Alvarez ensured the Blue Jays of victory at No. 4 singles, taking down Allen in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, extending the USJ lead to 5-0 to clinch the match.
- Freshman Daynah Echevarria (New Britain, Conn.) continued the Blue Jays dominance at No. 5 singles, defeating Mitchell-Warren in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.
- Gilland also secured a victory at No. 1 singles, besting Oliver in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, to increase the USJ edge to 8-0.
- Junior Jenna Griffith (Higganum, Conn.) completed the sweep for USJ at No. 6 singles, besting Nicoletta Pellegrino in a hard-fought contest, 6-4, 7-5, to give USJ the 9-0 victory.

The Blue Jays begin a three-match road trip, starting with a visit to Colby-Sawyer on Saturday, September 23. First serve against the Chargers at the Kelsey Courts in New London, N.H., is set for noon.
