Women's Tennis Battles Strong, Falls at Home to Suffolk, 5-4

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team battled strong, but dropped its home opener to Suffolk University (Suffolk) 5-4 Tuesday afternoon at the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex. The Blue Jays won two out of three doubles matches, but Suffolk took four out of the six singles contests. With the result, the Blue Jays fall to 0-2 while the Rams move to 1-1.

KEY MOMENTS

  • Senior Kathleen Gilland (Wethersfield, Conn.) and sophomore Liliana Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.) began that match at No. 1 doubles, has Suffolk opened up a 1-0 lead after the Rams' team of Caren Urbano and Rachel Hill defeated Gilland and Garcia, 8-4.
  • The Blue Jays bounced back at No. 3 doubles, as the team of sophomore Gia Alvarez (Meriden, Conn.) and freshman Nina Gardella (Lebanon, Conn.) secured an 8-5 victory over Suffolk's Alex Kickham and Anastasia Zakharava to tie the match at 1-1.
  • The No. 2 doubles team of senior Ananya Srivatsav (South Windsor, Conn.) and freshman Jillian Milo (Southington, Conn.) carried the momentum into the final doubles match of the day, defeating the Ram's pair of Nia Bebb and Angela Gross, 8-6, to give the Blue Jays a 2-1 edge entering the singles matches.
  • Milo and Zakharava would begin the singles portion of the day at No. 5 singles, with Zakharava winning in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, to tie the match back up at 2-2.
  • Suffolk's Urbano kept the Rams' momentum rolling at No. 1 singles, defeating Gilland, 6-3 ,6-3, to establish a 3-2 Suffolk lead.
  • Bebb increased the lead to 4-2, defeating Srivastsav at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-2.
  • Senior Anna Nemergut (Stratford, Conn.) kept the Blue Jays in the match at No. 6 singles, taking down Kickham in straight sets, 6-0, 7-6, to cut the gap to 4-3.
  • However, Gross would secure the victory for Suffolk at No. 4 singles, as she defeated Gia Alvarez in straight sets, 7-6 (7-4), 6-0) to increase the Ram's edge to 5-3.
  • Garcia would get one back for USJ though at No. 2 singles, defeating Suffolk's Hill in a three-set thriller, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
