West Hartford, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph tennis team topped the MCLA Trailblazers, 5-4, in the Blue Jays season opener on Friday afternoon at home on the USJ Tennis Courts. The win improves USJ's record to 1-0 on the season while MCLA falls to 1-1.
The Blue Jays took two-of-three doubles matches to open up play on Friday afternoon. Sophomores Sakinah Abdulsalam (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) and Ashley Savino (Old Saybrook, CT/Old Saybrook) grabbed the first win of the 2016 season for USJ with an 8-3, pro-set win at No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Leah Nguyen (West Hartford, CT/Conard) and freshman Domonique Carnot (Meriden, CT/Maloney) posted the other doubles victory, winning 7-4 in the tiebreak to take the set 8-7.
In singles play, Abdulsalam, Savino and senior Rebecca Mauri (Meriden, CT/Pratt) recorded victories to give the Blue Jays the 5-4 victory. At No. 3 singles, Abdulsalam blanked her opponent (6-0, 6-0) in straight sets to earn her first singles victory the season, while Savino and Mauri each won their matches 6-1, 6-1.
The USJ tennis team will return to action next on Thursday, Sept. 15 as they return home for a match with UMass Dartmouth on the USJ Tennis Courts beginning at 4 p.m.
