Bergeron, Blue Jays Take 11th At 2022 NEISDA Championships
KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's swimming & diving team finished 11th out of 13 Division III schools at the 2022 New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving (NEISDA) Championships, held at the Tootell Aquatics Center in Kingston, R.I. this past weekend.
Senior captain and diver Brielle Bergeron (Easthampton, Mass.) made the highlight reel for the Blue Jays by being selected as the Al Switzer Senior High Point Diver for the weekend's event. She broke a school record as well with her second-place finish in three-meter diving, scoring 336.05 points, breaking the record she had set just a few weeks ago in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championships. Bergeron has been on a tear on the board in recent events and capped off her career with the best the Blue Jays had to offer Sunday. She scored 28 points for USJ in total in this event.
Other notable finishes included a strong final swim from freshman Gabriela Targonska (Newington, Conn.), who put the region on notice that she will be a force to be reckoned with in swim seasons to come. She placed 13th in the B-Cut Final of the 100-Yard Individual Medley (IM), touching the wall in 1:07.54, just over a second away from a top-10 finish. She scored an all-important 14 points for USJ in the event.
The Blue Jays placed 11th out of 13 D-III schools in a highly-competitive regional event with 232 points. Roger Williams, who also won the 2022 GNAC Championship took home the NEISDA trophy as well, followed by fellow GNAC foes Regis College and Norwich University. 14 members of the USJ swim & dive teams qualified for this year's NEISDA Championships (nine on the men's side, five on the women's side).
COACH QUOTE [Brenda Straker]
"It was a fabulous weekend from start to finish. Every single Blue Jay experienced personal bests. The team energy was epic! The senior class of which includes the three pioneers for the men's program will be sorely missed. I thank each and every one of them for the role they've played in our program's legacy!"
