Saint Joseph In Eighth Saturday In GNAC Championships

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's swimming and diving team is currently eighth of 10 schools after Day 2 of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championships, held at the Boston Sports Institute in Wellesley, Mass. Saturday evening.

Despite a highly competitive field, the Blue Jays were able to grind out some tough swims to stay alive with one day remaining in the competition. Senior captain Shelby Cios (Rocky Hill, Conn.) cracked the top 10 in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:15.24. Only half a second separated eighth through 10th. The captain captured 13 points for USJ. Freshman Gabriela Targonska (Newington, Conn.) impressed in the 200 IM with an eighth-place swim in 2:29.30, over two seconds clear of the next best swimmer. She also scored 15 points. Sophomore Adelina Marcille (Waterford, Conn.) scored valuable points for Saint Joseph as well with a 14th-place finish in the 500 Freestyle. Her 6:11.18 final time was nearly three and a half seconds clear.

The Blue Jays teamed up to tame the 400 Medley Relay, taking seventh of 13 relays in 4:38.92. Targonska, Cios, Marcille and Freshman Amy Mamica (Rocky Hill, Conn.) completed the relay.

After the second day of competition, Saint Joseph sits in eighth of 10 schools with 160 points, and is just 10 points behind Saint Joseph's College of Maine for seventh. Roger Williams continues to lead, totaling 703 points, while the University of New England has crept up into second (388 points), followed by another swim powerhouse in Simmons (366).

COACH QUOTE [Brenda Straker] "The women have shown a lot of heart through day two. The effort is there even when records aren't broken, or personal bests aren't always there. It was a great night to keep things going at the GNAC Championships, and we are really excited to get ourselves back in the pool for day three tomorrow."
