Women's Swim & Dive Eighth After Day One Of GNAC Title Meet
WELLESLEY, Mass. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's swimming and diving team sits eighth after Day 1 of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championships, held at the Boston Sports Institute in Wellesley, Mass. Friday night.
Sophomore Adelina Marcille (Waterford, Conn.) took home 13th of 22 swimmers in the 1000 Yard Freestyle, a grueling event that tests both the mental and physical elements of the sport. Marcille finished in 12:54.03, a mere tenth of a second away from 12th. Freshman Amy Mamica (Rocky Hill, Conn.) wasn't far behind in 15th, scoring six points for the Blue Jays once again in a photo finish like her teammate Marcille, finishing just over a quarter of a second behind 14th place.
The women also put in a solid effort in the 200 Medley Relay, finishing in the eighth position. The relay included senior captain and diver Brielle Bergeron (Easthampton, Mass.), senior captain Shelby Cios (Rocky Hill, Conn.), freshman Gabriela Targonska (Newington, Conn.) and Mamica. The group's final time of 2:03.05 was enough to hold off Albertus Magnus for that eighth position.
After the first day of competition, Saint Joseph sits in eighth of nine schools with 74 points, but are just 13 points out of fifth (Colby-Sawyer). Roger Williams paced the field with 161 points, while Norwich and Simmons round out the podium respectively (126 and 116 points).
COACH QUOTE [Brenda Straker]
"The men really impressed tonight on our first day, breaking the school record in multiple relays. The women also put in some solid swims to keep themselves alive heading into the weekend. The distance we had was amazing, we had drops of 30 seconds, even 35 seconds. It was a great night to get things started at the GNAC Championships, and we are really excited to get ourselves back in the pool for day two tomorrow."
