WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Sophomore co-captain Alise Martel (Harwinton, Conn.), who continues to be a staple for the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's swimming and diving team, was selected as the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA) Swimmer of the Week for week eight of the 2019-2020 season, announced Wednesday by the association. It marks the first NEISDA Swimmer of the Week nod for Martel this season, and the second of her career.
Martel took home a solid third-place finish out of 26 swimmers in wire-to-wire 50 yard-freestyle action, with the top-five finishing just over a second apart. She also picked up a few more finishes in the top-10, placing eighth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 57.72, and seventh in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.64). The Blue Jays placed fourth overall of seven schools in the Fifth Annual Connecticut Cup, hosted by Wesleyan University on December 7.
Martel, whose freshman 100 freestyle record was broken Saturday by teammate Alexia Weir (Hebron, Conn.), still holds the freshman and varsity school record in the 50 Free (25.38), and shares three relay records (200 Free, 200/400 Medley).
Martel is a native of Harwinton, Connecticut, and swam for Lewis S. Mills High School in Burlington, Connecticut.
The Blue Jays are headed south for their annual winter trip to Florida. USJ will be training in Deerfield Beach from January 2 to January 9. They will return to the pool for competition on Friday, January 10 at Plymouth State at 3:30 p.m.
