Women's Soccer Battles, Falls on the Road at WestConn Friday Night

DANBURY, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's soccer team battled, but fell on the road at intrastate foe Western Connecticut State University (WCSU), 2-0, to open the 2024 regular season Friday afternoon at the Westside Stadium in Danbury, Conn. After a scoreless first half, the Wolves scored twice in the second half to take home the victory. With the result, the Blue Jays start the year at 0-1-0, while the Wolves begin the year at 1-0-0.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • USJ's sophomore netminder Madison Corcoran (Bristol, Conn.) was tested early in the first half, producing two saves to keep the game scoreless after the opening 15 minutes.
  • WCSU continued to pile on the pressure, hitting the post and forcing Corcoran into another pair of saves as the game remain deadlocked at 0-0 entering the halftime break.
  • The Blue Jays' offense generated a few chances early in the second half, but the Wolves were given a golden opportunity to open the scoring, drawing a penalty kick at the 63:47 mark. WCSU's senior forward Suzana Imetovski (Seymour, Conn.) stepped up to take the spot kick and put it past Corcoran to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
  • WCSU continued to control the game as senior midfielder Olivia Kotsaftis (Prosepect, Conn.) found the back of the net at the 80:19 mark, increasing the gap to 2-0.
  • The Wolves defense would stand strong, preventing the Blue Jays from getting back in the game as the hosts took home a season-opening 2-0 victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Corcoran played all 90 minutes in goal for USJ, picking up the loss (0-1-0) after making five saves.
  • The Wolves outshot the Blue Jays, 15-7.
  • WCSU also held the edge in corner kicks, 2-0.

The Blue Jays remain in Danbury, facing Farmingdale State tomorrow, Saturday August 31, at the Westside Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
