Schaffner Collects GNAC Co-Goalkeeper Of The Week Nod

WINTHROP, Mass. - Sophomore goalkeeper Victoria Schaffner (Waterbury, Conn.) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's soccer team collected a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) weekly award, it was unveiled Monday afternoon by the conference in its third weekly report of the 2021 season. Schaffner was named the GNAC Co-Goalkeeper of the Week, sharing the honor with Albertus Magnus' Michelle Mecca, after not allowing a single goal and helping lead the Blue Jays to a 1-0-1 record on the week. It marks the first career GNAC weekly accolade for Schaffner.

Schaffner was superb between the pipes for the Blue Jays on the week and was instrumental in helping USJ run its shutout streak to five-straight games to start the 2021 season, en route to collecting GNAC Co-Goalkeeper of the Week honors. The 5-7 sophomore netminder opened the week making a pair of saves in 45 minutes of action in a combined shutout on Wednesday in non-conference play in a 6-0 rout over MCLA at home. She followed that up with a career-high seven stops on Saturday in GNAC action at home versus perennial powerhouse Johnson & Wales in a 0-0 double-overtime draw. It marked the first time since 2014 that the Blue Jays had not been defeated by the Wildcats.

The Blue Jays are the only team in the GNAC to not allow a goal so far this season and are one of just eight teams remaining in Division III to not allow a goal yet this season (4-0-1 with five shutouts). Schaffner leads the GNAC with a perfect 1.000 save percentage and is 3-0-1 on the year between the posts.

UP NEXT
Schaffner and the Blue Jays will be back in action for a road GNAC match against the Saints of Emmanuel College on Wednesday, September 22. Kickoff is expected at 7:00 p.m. under the lights of Roberto Clemente Field.
