Blue Jays Win Big On Senior Night

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Behind a monster second-half, the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's basketball team took care of the Wildcats of Johnson & Wales University (JWU), 55-36, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matchup inside the O'Connell Center on senior night Tuesday.

With the win, the Blue Jays move to 13-10 overall on the 2021-22 season and 9-7 in GNAC play, while the Wildcats fall to 2-19 and 2-13 in conference games. USJ is now one win away from equaling its best record in the last 10 seasons, matching the 14-10 mark set by the Blue Jays in 2012-13.

A flock of four Blue Jays were honored on senior night before tipoff with a special presentation. Senior forward and captain Deanna De La Cruz (Winsted, Conn.), senior guard Silvana Barcomb (Middletown, Conn.), senior forward Lindsey Montminy (Vernon, Conn.), and senior forward and captain Cheyenne-Mone Smith (Wethersfield, Conn.) were all honored inside the O-C Tuesday.

Despite trailing by four at the half, the Blue Jays uncorked a major second-half surge to put the game away handedly, outscoring the visitors 36-13 in the second half. De La Cruz recorded her fifth career double-double and first of the season with a 12 point, 12 rebound effort. Sophomore guard Jelly Frigo (Canton, Conn.) added 12 points and six rebounds off the bench. Junior point guard and captain Amanda Fudge (Middletown, Conn.) scored 11 for the hosts. The Blue Jays recorded 11 steals and outrebounded JWU, 50-33.
