Diliberto Breaks Three-Point Record
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Devon Diliberto (Waterbury, Conn.) broke the University of Saint Joseph career record for three-pointers, but Wesleyan University used a late rally to defeat the Blue Jays 70-66 Sunday in a non-conference game at Wesleyan's Silloway Gym.
Wesleyan improved to 6-1 overall; St. Joseph is 3-4.
Mary Hyde (Derby, Conn.) led USJ with 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Heather Framski (Prospect, Conn.) and Diliberto (Waterbury, Conn.) had 14 points apiece for the Blue Jays.
The first of two Diliberto's three-pointers on the day, which came two minutes into the second half, was No. 180 for her career and allowed her to surpass former USJ volleyball coach and assistant basketball coach Val Briggs, who had 179 from 1997-2001.
USJ led 61-54 on a three-pointer from Lindsay Dionne (Portland, Conn.) with 7:34 to play, but Wesleyan scored the next eight points to go on top 62-61 after a free throw from Driesen Heath (New Haven, Conn.) with 4:23 to play. USJ was able to get even at 64 on a three-pointer by Hyde with 1:45 remaining, but Wesleyan's Amber Wessells (Montclair, N.J.) answered with a three of her own with 1:16 left and the Cardinals would not relinquish the lead again.
KellyAnn Rooney (Guilford, Conn.) scored 22 points to lead Wesleyan.
St. Joseph plays at Wentworth, Monday Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. The Blue Jays play their final game of the fall semester when they host MCLA, Fri. Dec. 6 at 6 p.m.
