USJ Softball Head Coach Jim McKinnon Announces Retirement

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — After more than two decades of leadership and mentorship, Jim McKinnon has announced his retirement as head coach of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) softball program.

"These 21 years have been a blessing. I have been able to meet many good people along the way including administrators, fellow coaches, parents, and umpires," said McKinnon. "I was fortunate to have coached so many student-athletes who put their heart and soul into softball. Any success we had can be attributed solely to their dedication and hard work in becoming the best players they could be. Then, to see them become successful in their own lives after their careers ended, with many having families of their own, has been very rewarding. I am very grateful to have been given a chance to coach here at USJ."

McKinnon, the longest-tenured and winningest coach in school history, concludes his career with a 412-342 record, leading the team to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament in 16 consecutive seasons and 18 times overall, highlighted by a GNAC Championship in 2019. He coached 55 all-conference selections during his tenure, including five each in 2013 and 2014, four in 2016, three in 2018, six in 2021, five in 2022, three in 2023 and four in 2026.

"Over the course of 21 years, Coach McKinnon has built a softball program defined by integrity, competitive excellence, and a deep commitment to student-athlete development," said Associate Vice President of Athletics and Recreation Amanda Devitt. "His leadership has elevated our program and positively impacted generations of student-athletes both on and off the field. Beyond his accomplishments, he brought a genuine sense of humor and warmth to our community, building lasting friendships with colleagues and athletes alike. We are incredibly grateful for his dedication to our institution and the meaningful connections he leaves behind."

During his time at the helm, McKinnon built a program rooted in the development of the whole student-athlete, emphasizing success in the classroom, competition on the field, and growth as individuals. He was deeply committed to preparing his players for life beyond softball, fostering a culture centered on accountability, resilience and respect. McKinnon's dedication to USJ and its athletic department extended well beyond his program, as he played an active role in supporting the department's mission and contributing to the continued growth of Blue Jays Athletics.
