Softball Opens GNAC Tournament With Victory Over Regis

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The South Division second-seeded University of Saint Joseph (USJ) softball team opened the 2026 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament on Wednesday afternoon, defeating South Division third-seed Regis College, 9–2, in the opening game of Pod A play at the USJ Softball Field. With the win, the Blue Jays improved to 24–17 and advanced to the winner's bracket of Pod A, where they will face pod host Simmons University on Saturday morning. The Pride dropped to 13–22 and moved into the loser's bracket, where they will face Emmanuel College in an elimination game on Saturday. All remaining Pod A games will be played at Daly Field in Brighton, Mass.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Regis struck first in the opening inning, using a walk, a sacrifice bunt, and an RBI single to take a 1–0 lead.
  • The Blue Jays answered immediately in the bottom half of the frame. Junior infielder Jennifer Antonowicz (Wolcott, Conn.) singled and later scored on a throwing error. Sophomore outfielder Lorynes Suriel (Lynn, Mass.) followed by stealing second and advancing to third on the same miscue before coming home on a fielder's choice by junior outfielder Rachel Brewer‑Karimi (Torrington, Conn.).
  • Sophomore infielder Kayla Phelps (Wolcott, Conn.) capped the three‑run inning with an RBI single, giving USJ a 3–1 advantage.
  • The Pride pulled within one in the second, taking advantage of a wild pitch to make it 3–2.
  • USJ created separation in the third inning as freshman infielder Gracie Browne (Bristol, Conn.) and Suriel each singled before Brewer‑Karimi ripped a two‑RBI double down the left‑field line.
  • Moments later, senior outfielder Kaitlyn Ouellette (Wolcott, Conn.) lifted a sacrifice fly, and another Regis throwing error allowed an additional run to score, pushing the lead to 6–2.
  • The Blue Jays broke the game open in the fourth inning as Antonowicz singled and later scored on an error before Suriel delivered an RBI double to right field. Ouellette followed with an RBI single to extend the advantage to 9–2.
  • That proved to be more than enough support for senior pitcher Analise Escarraman (Windham, Conn.), who limited Regis to just two hits and shut down the Pride over the final five innings to secure the victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Brewer‑Karimi led the offense with three RBI, highlighted by a two‑run double.
  • Suriel finished with two hits, three runs scored, and an RBI.
  • Antonowicz and Browne each recorded two hits and scored twice.
  • Ouellette and Phelps each drove in a run.
  • Escarraman earned the win, improving to 9–3, after tossing a complete game, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out four.
