WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) softball team swept a non‑conference doubleheader against intrastate foe WestConn on Thursday afternoon at the USJ Softball Field. The Blue Jays took game one, 9–6, before securing the nightcap, 3–1. With the sweep, USJ improved to 22–16 overall, while the Wolves dropped to 10–20 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

USJ struck first in the bottom of the first inning as junior infielder Jennifer Antonowicz (Wolcott, Conn.) drew a leadoff walk, stole second and third base, and came around to score on an error to give the Blue Jays a 1–0 lead.

WestConn answered in the third, capitalizing on a pair of hits and Blue Jay miscues to plate four runs and take a 4–1 advantage.

The Blue Jays responded in a big way in the fourth inning, erupting for seven runs on four hits and multiple WestConn errors. Sophomore catcher Abi Julian (Stafford Springs, Conn.) delivered an RBI single, before Antonowicz reached on an error that brought home two runs.

Junior outfielder Rachel Brewer‑Karimi (Torrington, Conn.) highlighted the frame with a three‑RBI double down the left‑field line, giving USJ an 8–4 lead.

USJ added an insurance run in the sixth when Antonowicz scored on a groundout by senior outfielder Kaitlyn Ouellette (Wolcott, Conn.), extending the lead to 9–4.

WestConn pushed across two runs in the seventh inning, but the Blue Jays closed out the game to secure the 9–6 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Brewer‑Karimi paced the offense, going 2‑for‑3 with a double and three RBI.
- Camille Jones and Julian each drove in a run, while Ouellette added an RBI.
- Antonowicz scored three times and swiped three bases.
- Senior Paige Fekete (Watertown, Conn.) earned the win, improving to 8–7, after tossing a complete game and allowing six runs (three earned) on six hits while striking out six.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After three scoreless innings to open the nightcap, WestConn broke through in the fourth inning, using a pair of baserunners and a wild pitch to take a 1–0 lead.

USJ answered in the bottom of the fifth when freshman infielder Gracie Browne (Bristol, Conn.) drew a walk, stole second base, and later scored on an RBI single by sophomore catcher Jainna Marcinczyk (Seymour, Conn.) to tie the game at 1–1.

The Blue Jays took control in the sixth inning as senior Jordyn Fitch (Andover, Conn.) delivered a pinch‑hit single before senior outfielder Avianna Ibrahim (Colchester, Conn.) moved her into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt.

Sophomore outfielder Lorynes Suriel (Lynn, Mass.) followed with a base hit, and Ouellette delivered the decisive blow, ripping a two‑RBI double to give USJ a 3–1 advantage.

That was more than enough support for sophomore pitcher Brenna Lyver (Enfield, Conn.), who shut the door over the final frames to secure the victory and complete the doubleheader sweep.

The Blue Jays close out the 2026 regular season with a trip to Nashua, N.H., on Saturday, April 25, for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference inter‑divisional doubleheader against Rivier University. First pitch against the Raiders at Raider Diamond is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
