Softball Splits GNAC South Division Doubleheader at Regis, Clinches GNAC Postseason Berth

HOW IT HAPPENED

USJ struck first in the opening inning as junior infielder Jennifer Antonowicz (Wolcott, Conn.) led off with a single and later came around to score following a pair of Regis throwing errors to give the Blue Jays a 1–0 lead.

Sophomore infielder Kayla Phelps (Wolcott, Conn.) followed with a ground ball that brought home sophomore infielder Camille Jones (Lawrence Twp., N.J.) from third, extending the advantage to 2–0.

Regis answered in the bottom half of the inning with a run to make it 2–1 and continued to chip away, scoring three times in the third to take a 4–2 lead.

The Blue Jays responded in the fourth when junior outfielder Rachel Brewer‑Karimi (Torrington, Conn.) laced an RBI double down the left‑field line to tie the game at 4–4.

The Pride regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but USJ answered again in the fifth. Antonowicz scored on a wild pitch to even the game before Phelps delivered a sacrifice fly to bring home senior outfielder Kaitlyn Ouellette (Wolcott, Conn.), giving USJ a 5–4 edge.

Regis responded decisively in the bottom of the fifth, plating five runs to take control at 10–5. The Blue Jays were unable to rally as the Pride held on for the game‑one victory.

- Sophomore outfielder Lorynes Suriel (Lynn, Mass.) led USJ at the plate, going 3‑for‑4 with a double and recording the team's lone stolen base.
- Phelps finished with a team‑high two RBI.
- Senior pitcher Paige Fekete (Watertown, Conn.) earned a no‑decision after allowing four runs while striking out two over 3.0 innings.
- Ouellette took the loss in relief, surrendering six runs on eight hits while striking out one in 1.2 innings.
- Sophomore Brenna Lyver (Enfield, Conn.) tossed the final 1.1 innings, allowing two hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED

USJ jumped out to an early lead in the first inning as Antonowicz scored on an RBI groundout by Phelps, before sophomore infielder Gabby Marichal (Lynn, Mass.) followed with an RBI single to give the Blue Jays a 2–0 advantage.

Regis got on the board in the second with an RBI single, but USJ responded in the third when Marichal laced an RBI double to left‑center to extend the lead to 3–1.

The Pride chipped away in the sixth with a sacrifice fly before tying the game in the seventh on an RBI double to force extra innings.

In the eighth, USJ regained control as Suriel lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score sophomore pinch runner Gianna Quaresima (Rocky Hill, Conn.), giving the Blue Jays a 4–3 lead.

Two batters later, Brewer‑Karimi delivered the decisive blow, ripping a two‑RBI double down the left‑field line to push the advantage to 6–3.

Senior pitcher Analise Escarraman (Windham, Conn.) shut the door in the bottom half of the inning to seal the extra‑inning victory.

- Antonowicz and senior outfielder Avianna Ibrahim (Colchester, Conn.) each recorded two hits.

- Escarraman earned the win, improving to 7–3, after tossing a complete‑game effort while allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out seven.
UP NEXT
The Blue Jays return to action on Thursday, April 23, hosting intrastate non‑conference foe WestConn for a doubleheader at the USJ Softball Field. First pitch against the Wolves is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
