WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) softball team split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) South Division doubleheader with intrastate conference rival Albertus Magnus College on Saturday afternoon at the USJ Softball Field. The Falcons claimed the opener, 2–0, before the Blue Jays bounced back in the finale with a 6–0 victory.
Prior to first pitch, the USJ Department of Athletics honored seniors Madelyn Ellis (Newington, Conn.), Analise Escarraman (Windham, Conn.), Paige Fekete (Watertown, Conn.), Jordyn Fitch (Andover, Conn.), Avianna Ibrahim (Colchester, Conn.), and Kaitlyn Ouellette (Wolcott, Conn.) during a Senior Day ceremony.
With the split, the Blue Jays moved to 19–15 overall, 9–5 in GNAC play, and 6–4 in the South Division, while the Falcons improved to 19–14 overall, 12–2 in conference action, and 8–2 in the division.
GAME ONE | USJ 0, ALBERTUS 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
Albertus struck first in the top of the opening inning, taking advantage of two singles and a Blue Jay error to grab a 1–0 lead.
-
The Falcons added an insurance run in the fifth inning on an RBI single to extend the advantage to 2–0.
-
USJ threatened in the bottom of the fifth as sophomore outfielder Lorynes Suriel (Lynn, Mass.) singled and moved to third on consecutive sacrifice bunts by sophomore catcher Sadie Girgasky (Bethlehem, Conn.) and freshman infielder Gracie Browne (Bristol, Conn.), but Albertus worked out of the jam to preserve the shutout.
-
The Blue Jays brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh inning, but the Falcons closed the door to secure the opener.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Suriel led USJ with a 2‑for‑3 performance and a stolen base.
- Senior Paige Fekete (Watertown, Conn.) took the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits over 6.0 innings.
- Ouellette tossed a scoreless seventh inning in relief.
GAME TWO | USJ 6, ALBERTUS 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
USJ wasted little time taking control in the nightcap, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Junior infielder Jennifer Antonowicz (Wolcott, Conn.) drew a leadoff walk and later scored on an RBI walk by Ellis, while Suriel added a sacrifice fly and sophomore infielder Kayla Phelps (Wolcott, Conn.) followed with an RBI single to give the Blue Jays a 3–0 lead.
-
The Blue Jays added to their advantage in the third when Suriel was hit by a pitch, stole second base, and scored on a single by Phelps to make it 4–0.
-
USJ tacked on another run in the fourth as Ibrahim singled, stole second, and came home on an RBI double by Antonowicz.
-
The final run came in the sixth when Phelps singled and later scored on a bases‑loaded walk by Ouellette, extending the lead to 6–0.
-
That was more than enough support for senior pitcher Escarraman, who shut down the Falcons' offense and completed the doubleheader split.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Phelps paced the offense with a 3‑for‑3 performance and two RBI.
- Antonowicz and Ibrahim each recorded multi‑hit games.
- Suriel and Ibrahim each stole a base.
- Escarraman earned the win, improving to 6–3, after firing a complete‑game one‑hit shutout while striking out three.
