Softball Drops GNAC South Division Doubleheader at Mitchell on Sunday

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) softball team dropped a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) South Division doubleheader against intrastate foe Mitchell College on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Mariners claimed the opener, 11–2, in five innings before winning an eight‑inning battle, 4–3, in the finale. With the results, USJ moved to 17–13 overall, 8–4 in GNAC play, and 5–3 in the South Division, while Mitchell improved to 14–13–1 overall, 7–5 in conference action, and 5–3 in the division.

GAME ONE | USJ 2, MITCHELL 11 (FIVE INNINGS)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • USJ struck first in the top of the first inning as sophomore infielder Kayla Phelps (Wolcott, Conn.) lined an RBI double to left‑center field, scoring sophomore infielder Camille Jones (Lawrence Twp., N.J.) to give the Blue Jays a 1–0 lead.
  • Mitchell answered in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three runs to take a 3–1 advantage.
  • The Mariners added four runs in the second before tacking on three more in the third to build a 10–1 lead. Mitchell added another run in the fourth to extend the margin to 11–1.
  • USJ plated a run in the top of the fifth when Jones reached on an error, allowing senior outfielder Avianna Ibrahim (Colchester, Conn.) to score and cut the deficit to 11–2.
  • The Blue Jays would get no closer, as Mitchell secured the run‑rule victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Jones and Phelps each drove in a run.
  • Jones, Phelps, freshman infielder Gracie Browne (Bristol, Conn.), and Ibrahim each recorded a hit.
  • Jones added a stolen base.
  • Senior pitcher Paige Fekete (Watertown, Conn.) took the loss, allowing three runs while striking out two over 1.0 inning.
  • Sophomore Brenna Lyver (Enfield, Conn.) tossed the final three innings in relief.

GAME TWO | USJ 3, MITCHELL 4 (EIGHT INNINGS)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the first inning when junior infielder Jennifer Antonowicz (Wolcott, Conn.) doubled to left‑center field, moved to third on a single by Jones, and later scored on a double‑play ball off the bat of senior outfielder Kaitlyn Ouellette (Wolcott, Conn.) to give USJ a 1–0 lead.
  • USJ added to its advantage in the second inning as sophomore catcher Sadie Girgasky (Bethlehem, Conn.) singled and advanced to third on an outfield error before sophomore infielder Gabby Marichal (Lynn, Mass.) doubled down the left‑field line to make it 2–0.
  • The Blue Jays extended the lead to 3–0 in the fourth when sophomore outfielder Lorynes Suriel (Lynn, Mass.) singled, stole second base, and scored on a double to right‑center field by Ibrahim.
  • Mitchell got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, trimming the deficit to 3–1. The Mariners added an unearned run in the fifth before tying the game in the seventh to force extra innings.
  • After holding USJ scoreless in the top of the eighth, Mitchell secured the victory with a walk‑off single to claim the 4–3 win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Marichal paced the offense with a 2‑for‑3 performance and one RBI.
  • Suriel recorded USJ's lone stolen base.
  • Senior pitcher Analise Escarraman (Windham, Conn.) started and allowed two unearned runs over 5.0 innings while striking out three.
  • Ouellette took the loss in relief, surrendering two unearned runs over 2.1 innings.

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays round out their six‑game road trip on Thursday, April 16, traveling to Anna Maria College for a non‑conference doubleheader. First pitch against the AMCATS at AMCAT Softball Field in Paxton, Mass., is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
