Softball Drops Non-Conference Doubleheader to Salem State Monday
GAME ONE | USJ 2, SALEM STATE 4
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Vikings struck immediately, scoring three runs in the top of the first to take a 3–0 lead.
- USJ answered in the bottom of the second when sophomore infielder Brenna Lyver (Wolcott, Conn.) delivered an RBI single down the right-field line, cutting the deficit to 3–1.
- Salem State responded in the fourth, adding a run to extend its lead to 4–1.
- The Blue Jays pulled within two in the fifth, as junior infielder Jennifer Antonowicz (Wolcott, Conn.) recorded an RBI single up the middle to make it 4–2.
- USJ could not get any closer, as Salem State held off the Blue Jays to secure the 4–2 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Antonowicz led the offense, going 2-for-4 at the plate.
- Freshman infielder Gracie Browne (Bristol, Conn.) and sophomore outfielder Gianna Quaresima (Rocky Hill, Conn.) each stole a base.
- Senior Paige Fekete (Watertown, Conn.) took the loss (6–5), allowing four runs on five hits while striking out two over 3.1 innings.
- Senior Analise Escarraman (Windham, Conn.) tossed 3.2 innings in relief, allowing one hit and striking out one.
GAME TWO | USJ 0, SALEM STATE 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Salem State took an early lead once again, scoring two runs in the top of the first to go ahead 2–0.
- Senior Kaitlyn Ouellette (Wolcott, Conn.) settled in from there, holding the Vikings to just one hit the rest of the way. However, the Blue Jays were unable to generate offense against Salem State's pitching, which limited USJ to a single hit in the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Antonowicz recorded the lone hit for the Blue Jays.
- Ouellette pitched a complete game, taking the loss (4–2) after allowing two runs on three hits while striking out a season-high eight.
UP NEXT
The Blue Jays conclude an eight-game homestand, hosting GNAC South Division foe Elms College for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 8. First pitch at the USJ Softball Field is set for 3:00 p.m.
