Softball Travels to Johnson & Wales for GNAC Championship Series

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The South Division third-seeded University of Saint Joseph (USJ) softball team will vie for the program's third Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) title, traveling to South Division top-seeded Johnson & Wales University (JWU) for the 2025 GNAC Championship Series. The best-of-three series beings on Saturday, May 10 at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex in Providence, R.I. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

USJ QUICK HITS 

  • USJ entered the GNAC Tournament as the third seed in the South Division, finishing with a 9-5 divisional record.
  • The Blue Jays were slotted into Pod A, where they upset South Division second-seeded and intrastate rival Albertus Magnus College twice, and pod hosts and North Division top-seeded Rivier University to advance to the GNAC Championship Series for the first time since 2019.
  • USJ has made two appearances in the GNAC title bout, winning the conference crown in both 2019 and 2000.
  • The Blue Jays are paced at the plate by the trio of sophomore infielder Jennifer Antonowicz (Wolcott, Conn.), senior two-way star Alyssa Roberts (Naugatuck, Conn.) and senior shortstop Jenna Zup (Berlin, Conn.).
  • Antonowicz leads the team with a .408 batting average, recording team-highs in hits (49), doubles (7), triples (7) and stolen bases (16). The second baseman also has scored a team-high 33 runs while recording 26 RBIs.
  • Roberts follows closely with a .389 average, 10 runs, 37 hits, five doubles, and a team-high 28 RBIs.
  • Zup is hitting .384 with 48 hits, six doubles, 32 runs, 18 RBIs, and has drawn a team-best 15 walks.
  • In the circle, Roberts owns a team-leading 3.16 ERA with an 8-7 record, 10 complete games, and 39 strikeouts over 97.1 innings.
  • Junior Paige Fekete (Watertown, Conn.), who has started inside the circle in every postseason game, owns a 7-6 record, 39 strikeouts, six complete games, a 4.14 ERA, and 1.72 WHIP over the course of the season.

SCOUTING JWU

  • The Wildcats entered the GNAC Tournament as the top seed in the South Division, posting a 12-2 record in divisional play.
  • JWU hosted Pod B, defeating South Division fifth-seeded Regis College, North Division second-seeded Emmanuel College and North Division third-seeded Simmons University to advance to the GNAC Championship Series for the first time since 2022.
  • The Wildcats are making their first GNAC Championship Series appearance since 2022 and are 5-0 all-time in GNAC title games.
  • JWU is led at the plate by the duo of Mackenzie Clee and Mady Lyons.
  • Clee tops the team with a .459 batting average–which is second in the GNAC–and 47 runs, while posting 51 hits, 11 doubles and 19 RBIs.
  • Lyons leads the GNAC with 12 home runs and 50 RBIs. She's also batting .433 with 55 hits (2nd in GNAC) and an .819 slugging percentage.
  • Katie Scheid and Jillian Reed form a dominate one-two punch inside the pitching circle.
  • Scheid leads the GNAC with 14 wins and a 2.19 ERA, while Reed boasts a 2.40 ERA, the second-best mark in the GNAC, and 52 strikeouts.

INSIDE THE SERIES 

  • JWU leads the all-time series 39-23, dating back to 1996.
  • The Wildcats have won 10 straight against the Blue Jays.
  • JWU is 18-9 at home versus USJ.
  • Earlier this season, JWU had the upper-hand against USJ, sweeping a doubleheader in West Hartford.
  • This is the first postseason meeting between the teams since 2022.
