Softball Falls at Home to Johnson & Wales During Senior Day Friday Afternoon

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) softball team dropped both ends of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) South Division doubleheader against Johnson & Wales University (JWU) Friday afternoon at the USJ Softball Field in West Hartford, Conn. The Wildcats secured the win in game one, 9-0, after five innings, before completing the sweep with a 4-1 victory in game two. With the results, the Blue Jays dropped to 17-16 overall, 8-6 in the GNAC and 8-4 in South Division play, while the Wildcats improved to 23-13 on the season, 14-2 in the GNAC and 12-2 in divisional play.

The doubleheader against the Wildcats served as senior day for the Blue Jays, as the USJ department of athletics honored Emma Carpenter (Brooklyn, Conn.), Brianna Catalani (Watertown, Conn.), Allison Conger (Plainfield, Conn.), Alyssa Roberts (Naugatuck, Conn.), Alex Silver (Vernon, Conn.) and Jenna Zup (Berlin, Conn.) in-between the two games.

GAME ONE: JWU 9, USJ 0 (5 INNINGS)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • JWU jumped on the Blue Jays early, scoring three runs in the top of the third to take a quick 3-0 edge.
  • USJ struggled offensively, as the Wildcats tacked on two runs in the third, before adding four in the fourth to break open a 9-0 lead.
  • The Blue Jays could not answer back, as JWU secured the opening game via the run-rule, 9-0, after five innings.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Catalani and junior outfielders Kaitlyn Ouellette (Wolcott, Conn.) and Avianaa Ibrahim (Colchester, Conn.) each recorded a hit in game one.
  • Roberts got the start inside the circle in the opener, picking up the loss (7-6) after allowing nine runs, four of which were earned, off eight hits in 3.0 innings of work.
  • Sophomore Analise Escarraman (Windham, Conn.) threw the remaining 2.0 innings in relief, surrendering one hit.

GAME TWO: JWU 4, USJ 1

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After a scoreless first inning, USJ would strike in the bottom of the second, as Catalani launched an RBI-double to the left-center gap, plating Roberts and establishing a 1-0 lead.
  • JWU responded in kind in the top of the third, scoring one run to level the game at 1-1.
  • The visitors continued their momentum, scoring twice in the fourth, before adding a run in the fourth to break open a 4-1 gap after four innings.
  • USJ was not able to answer at the plate, as JWU took home the win in game two, 4-1.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Catalani, Roberts and Carpenter all notched hits in game two.
  • Junior Paige Fekete (Watertown, Conn.) pitched a complete game in game two, receiving the loss (4-6) after allowing four runs, one of which was earned, off seven hits while tossing two strikeouts.

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays conclude the 2025 regular season on the road at Lasell University on Sunday, April 27. First pitch in game one of a doubleheader at Taylor Field in Newton, Mass., is set for noon.
