Softball Falls To Wesleyan In Regular Season Home Finale
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) softball team dropped an 8-3 decision to the Cardinals of Wesleyan University (WES), in its final non-conference game of the 2022 season and the team's regular season home finale at the USJ Softball Field, on a windy Wednesday afternoon.
GAME INFORMATION
Score: Wesleyan 8, Saint Joseph 3
Records: WES 13-15, USJ 18-18
Location: USJ Softball Field | West Hartford, Conn.
KEY MOMENTS
- Wesleyan struck first with a four-spot in the opening inning relying on an aggressive approach to get the ball in play. A double and pair of singles drove in the runs for the visitors, including an extra-base hit down the left-field line from senior captain Sophia Sciarappa (Charlton, Mass.).
- USJ, down 4-0 early, went to work, cutting the gap in half thanks to a two-out, two-RBI single from junior outfielder Jenna Masiello (Cromwell, Conn.). It was 4-2 Cardinals after a pair of frames.
- Freshman pitcher Amanda Savinelli (New Haven, Conn.), who has had a tall task in her rookie season, started to slow the game down and find ways out of jams. The infield played its part as well, including freshman Jenna Zup (Berlin, Conn.), who retired the side on several occasions with her dependable fielding.
- Meanwhile, Wesleyan tacked on four insurance runs to go up 8-2, adding runs one at a time in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings respectively. USJ got one back in the sixth on an error, but could not drive in anymore in the bottom of the seventh.
- Zup was the lone member of the Blue Jays to record a multi-hit game on the day, finishing 2-for-3 at the dish with a pair of singles.
IN THE CIRCLE
WES – Sophomore Brooklin Williams (Marion, Ohio) picked up the win (2-4), allowing three runs (2 ER) on seven hits in a complete game. She also walked eight and fanned six.
USJ – Savinelli was dealt the loss (8-12), allowing eight runs on 15 hits in seven innings of work. She finished with one strikeout and walked a pair.
COACH QUOTE [Jim McKinnon]
"After we gave up those four runs in the first, it was really a 4-3 game after that against a really good team. I like the way we continued to battle and Amanda Savinelli kept us in it. I am looking forward to our next two days of practice, then it is on to Dean. We control our future now."
