Softball Tops Western New England in Second Game
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – University of Saint Joseph junior Ashley Gall (Stafford Springs, Conn.) went 3-for-4 with four RBI and freshman Patti Sciglimpaglia (Norwalk, Conn.) had two doubles and three RBI to help USJ defeat Western New England Univ., 11-3 in the second game and earn a split of a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday at Golden Bear Field.
The game was ended after five innings by the mercy rule. WNE won the opener 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Saint Joseph is 11-7 overall; WNE is 8-7.
USJ senior Emily Hummel (Hebron, Conn.) had a fifth-inning single in the second game, which was career hit No. 145 and tied her for the career school record with Mary Ann Parsons, who had 145 hits from 1999-2001. Gall's first of four hits on the day, a fifth-inning single in the first game, was her 100th career hit and she became the 15th player in school history to reach the century mark.
St. Joseph freshman Emily Vigue (Lebanon, Conn.) went 3-for-3 in the first game and pitched a complete game in the second for her first collegiate victory. Gall, Patti Sciglimpaglia and Vigue all had four hits on the day.
In the opener, WNE scored an unearned run in the second inning and USJ tied the score, 1-1 in the fourth. Patti Sciglimpaglia led off with a single and scored from second on a one-out single by Mary Sciglimpaglia (Norwalk, Conn.) The Golden Bears eventually won the game on a two-out, bases loaded single by Grace Kucharski (Avon, Conn.) St. Joseph had nine hits, but left 10 runners on base.
In the second game, St. Joseph strung hits together better, scoring eight runs in the third inning and three more in the fifth. Patti Sciglimpaglia had a two-run double and Gall a two-run single in the third inning, which was aided by three walks, two errors and a hit batter. In the fifth, Gall (two-run double) and Patti Sciglimpaglia (RBI-double) again had run-scoring hits. Jocelyn Grady (Meriden, Conn.) finished with two hits and two runs scored for St. Joseph.
The Blue Jays play at Albertus Magnus, Fri. April 5 in a 5 p.m. doubleheader and host Mount Ida, Sat. April 6 in a noon doubleheader.
