LONGMEADOW, Mass. – Ashley Gall (Stafford Springs, Conn.) hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to break a 3-all tie and the USJ softball team defeated Bay Path 5-3 Tuesday in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader to complete a sweep.
Saint Joseph improved to 8-4 overall and Bay Path dropped to 7-9.
USJ Freshman Emily Vigue (Lebanon, Conn.) had a single, double and five RBI in the first game, won by the Blue Jays, 13-3. Winning pitcher Emily Hummel (Hebron, Conn.) went 3-for-4 with two RBI, Gall had two hits and two RBI and Hilary LaRosa (Meriden, Conn.) had two hits for St. Joseph.
The Blue Jays broke a scoreless tie with four third-inning runs. Gall walked with the bases loaded to force home Haley McCall (Lebanon, Conn.) and Vigue followed with a three-run double to left center. Hummel had an RBI-double in the fifth inning and an RBI-single as part of a two-run sixth.
Leading 7-3, Saint Joseph scored six, seventh-inning runs with Vigue capping the rally with a two-run single. Hummel allowed one unearned run and struck out seven in four innings to improve her record to 5-0 and Vigue earned her second save, striking out seven more over the final three innings.
In the late game, Patti Sciglimpaglia (Norwalk, Conn.) struck out 13 in six innings to earn her third victory of the season. St. Joseph scored first in the second game, again in the third inning, as Stephanie Valerio (Wolcott, Conn.) had an RBI-single. Bay Path took its one lead of day in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run double by senior Nicole Dexter, but USJ answered immediately in the fourth with an RBI-single from LaRosa to make it 2-2.
Both teams scored an unearned run in the fifth, which set the stage for Gall, who homered with one out. It was her second of the season and school-record 11th of her career. USJ tacked on a run in the seventh on a double by Hummel and an RBI-single from Shauna Sullivan (Rocky Hill, Conn.) before the game was called due to darkness.
Saint Joseph is scheduled to next play against Simmons Thur. April 28 in a GNAC doubleheader, but a location has yet to be finalized.
