Softball Wraps Up Spring Training Trip

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The University of Saint Joseph softball team dropped a 9-0, five-inning game Tuesday morning to Rio Grande to conclude its spring training trip to Fast Pitch Dreams.

St. Joseph finished 5-3 on the trip. The Blue Jays went 4-0 against NCAA Division-III opponents, split with Division-II Ursuline and dropped two games to Rio Grande, an NAIA member.

Haley McCall (Lebanon, Conn.) and Patti Sciglimpaglia (Norwalk, Conn.) each went 10-for-22 to lead the Blue Jays with .455 batting averages. Ashley Gall (Stafford Springs, Conn.) batted .440 (11-for-25) with a team-high 11 RBI and Emily Hummel (Hebron, Conn.) hit .391 (9-for-23) with 10 RBI. Hummel earned three wins on the mound and Sciglimpaglia two.

"It was a very successful trip," St. Joseph coach Jim McKinnon said. "Our new players fit right in and our veterans played well, too. We're well-prepared and ready for our conference games."

St. Joseph plays at Emerson Fri. March 22 in a 3 p.m. doubleheader to open play in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. The Blue Jays play their home opener the following day, Sat. March 23 against Anna Maria in a noon doubleheader.
