Softball Earns Two Wins in Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – University of Saint Joseph junior Ashley Gall (Stafford Springs, Conn.) went a combined 6-for-10 with a home run and seven RBI as the USJ softball team went 2-1 Monday at Fast Pitch Dreams in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

USJ defeated Grinnell 20-5 in five innings and 9-5 and lost to Rio Grande 10-0 in five innings. Saint Joseph is 5-2 on its trip.

The Blue Jays scored eight first-inning runs and 12 in the third of their first win over Grinnell. Gall had two hits and third RBI in the third inning and five RBI for the game. Patti Sciglimpaglia (Norwalk, Conn.) went 3-for-4 with two RBI for USJ and Mary Sciglimpaglia (Norwalk, Conn.) had two hits and four RBI. Shauna Sullivan (Rocky Hill, Conn.) had two hits and three runs scored as St. Joseph had 17 hits.

The Blue Jays were held to one hit in their middle game before finishing their three-game day with another victory over Grinnell. Gall went 4-for-5 with two RBI and senior Emily Hummel (Hebron, Conn.) went 3-for-5 with four RBI.

St. Joseph fell behind 3-0 in the first inning and trailed 3-1 before taking the lead with a five-run fourth inning. Hummel had a two-run single to turn a one-run deficit into a 4-3 lead and Gall followed with a two-run homer to extend the lead to 6-3. It was Gall's first homer of the season and she extended her career school record with her 10th in two-plus seasons.

Hummel improved to 3-0 on the mound in the first game and earned her first save in the finale in which Patti Sciglimpaglia pitched four innings for her second win.

St. Joseph completes its trip Tue. March 19 with an 8 a.m. game against Rio Grande.
