Wyse Makes History On Day Three Of NEISDA Championships
KINGSTON, R.I. – It was an unforgettable night for senior captain Jacob Wyse (Broad Brook, Conn.) and the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's swimming & diving team, as Wyse took home his second straight gold medal in the 400-yard Individual Medley (IM) to catapult the Blue Jays in the limelight on a historic Saturday for swimming, part of day three of the New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving (NEISDA) Championships, held at the Tootell Aquatics Center in Kingston, R.I.
Wyse, who earned a bronze medal as a freshman in the event, won that same event in 2020. He has now made it back-to-back wins and three medals in three seasons (no 2021 NEISDA Championships due to the COVID-19 pandemic). Wyse is a former Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Year, as well as an All-New England Team selection. The senior captain proved his worth in the pool with a 4:16.91 winning time, with only one other swimmer out of 15 competitors eclipsing the 4:20.00 mark. The Blue Jays were inspired by the event and still sit solidly in fifth with one day of action still to come. Fourth-placed Husson is still very much in play as USJ trails by 61 points.
Other notable finishes for Saint Joseph included a seventh-place swim by Wyse in the 100 Backstroke (1:01.56, 12 points), and a hard-earned fifth in the 200 Free Relay, where USJ was just half a second away from finishing fourth (and a second away from a new school record). The team of senior captain Brendan Lynch (Watertown, Conn.), Wyse, junior Maksym Ugrak (Newington, Conn.), and junior Aaron Gauvin (Berlin, Conn.) completed the relay with confidence.
COACH QUOTE [Brenda Straker]
"It was an incredible night for Jacob Wyse and our entire swimming and diving program. I am very proud of how we swam tonight, and I am really looking forward to finishing off the meet strong with tomorrow night's swims. We have put ourselves in a good position for Sunday."
The Blue Jays remain in a good spot heading into the final day, sitting in fifth still out of 11 schools at 205 points, 61 points out of fourth place. Roger Williams is currently well-out in front with 851 points, followed by Norwich (539) and Maine Maritime Academy (417). 14 members of the USJ swim & dive teams qualified for this year's NEISDA Championships (nine on the men's side, five on the women's side).
