Men's Swimming & Diving Opens NEISDA Championships Thursday
KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's swimming & diving team posted a sixth-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay to kick off the New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving (NEISDA) Championships at the Tootell Aquatics Center in Kingston, R.I. on Thursday evening.
In the lone and opening event of the four-day NEISDA Championships, USJ's 800-yard freestyle relay team of senior captain Jack Monroe (Waterbury, Conn.), sophomore Brandon Scacca (Rocky Hill, Conn.), junior Maksym Ugrak (Newington, Conn.), and sophomore Vinnie Carbonell (Berlin, Conn.) combined to post a time of 8:09.40 to grab the sixth-place overall finish. The Blue Jays just recently broke the school record in this event during the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championships February 4-6 after finishing in 7:49.49. 14 members of the USJ swim & dive teams qualified for this year's NEISDA Championships (nine on the men's side, five on the women's side), all of which will be competing over the next three days against the best New England swimming has to offer.
The result earned the Blue Jays 26 points towards their team score and they sit in sixth place after the opening night of action. USJ is just 14 points out of first place.
