Men's Swim & Dive Stays Third Through Two Days Of GNAC Championships

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's swimming and diving team kept it consistent Saturday, remaining in third place through Day 2 the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championships, held at the Boston Sports Institute in Wellesley, Mass. Saturday night.

USJ turned heads with its record-breaking final event, the 400 Medley Relay, but key performances were aplenty earlier in the night, as senior captain Brendan Lynch (Watertown, Conn.) placed sixth out of 10 in the 50 Backstroke in 27.52 seconds, just over a tenth of a second out of fifth place. Junior Aaron Gauvin (Berlin, Conn.) was right on his heels in seventh place (half a second behind). Senior captain Jacob Wyse (Broad Brook, Conn.) put together a couple of key swims as well including the 200 IM and 200 Backstroke, the latter finishing in the 4th position with a hefty 4.5 second gap from the next closest swimmer.

The moment of the night for USJ came in the final event of the evening; the 400 Medley Relay, where the Blue Jays broke the school record with a 3:53.16. Lynch, along with junior Maksym Ugrak (Newington, Conn.), Wyse and Gauvin put together the sensational swim. Saint Joseph clipped the record by about three-quarters of a second, a record that was nearly two years old (Feb. 14, 2020).

USJ concluded the second day of swimming comfortably in the third position (92 points). Roger Williams continued to pace the field (276 points), while Norwich separated themselves early as the runner-up favorite (194 points). USJ is on pace for its best GNAC Championship finish in program history with one day of events to go.

COACH QUOTE
[Brenda Straker] "The men were equally impressive on our second day, breaking the school record in another relay. The level of consistency was on full display and we scored valuable points in the middle of the meet. It was another great night at the GNAC Championships, and we are really excited to get ourselves back in the pool for day three tomorrow."
