Records Fall For Men's Swim & Dive On Day One Of GNAC Championships

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's swimming and diving team impressed on all fronts during Day 1 of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championships, sitting comfortably in third position of five behind a series of new school records to aid the charge.

Records fell for Saint Joseph in the 200 Freestyle Relay and the 200 Medley Relay. There were only a few events held Friday night, but the Blue Jays got off to a great start nonetheless. The Blue Jays opened things up with a third-place swim of eight relays in the 200 Freestyle Relay, scoring 16 points overall, and finishing in 1:31.04 seconds – over two and a half seconds quicker than the previous school record, which was set December 4, 2021 at the Connecticut Cup. The relay was led by senior captain Jacob Wyse (Broad Brook, Conn.), senior captain Brendan Lynch (Watertown, Conn.), junior Aaron Gauvin (Berlin, Conn.), and junior Maksym Ugrak (Newington, Conn.).

The men followed up one great performance with another, placing runner-up in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:41.85, good for 18 points in the standings. The same flock of Blue Jays swam this one as well. The time was not only impressive (less than three seconds from the GNAC Championship record), but it was nearly three seconds clear of the previous USJ school record. Two relay records shattered in a matter of minutes. With the effort, Saint Joseph finished the first day in third position with 35 points. Norwich is the leader at 56, while Roger Williams sits close behind with 49.

COACH QUOTE
 [Brenda Straker]
"The men really impressed tonight on our first day, breaking the school record in multiple relays. The distance we had was amazing, we had drops of 30 seconds, even 35 seconds. It was a great night to get things started at the GNAC Championships, and we are really excited to get ourselves back in the pool for day two tomorrow."
